Windows 8.1 is an update so it goes without saying that you need to be running Windows 8 in order to benefit. But that’s the one and only stipulation this time around – Windows 8.1 is free, and what’s more it doesn’t make any fancy minimum hardware demands or such like.

The best things in life are free

Yep, Windows 8.1 is really as free as the air you breathe. No price tag here. You can download the update from the Windows Store itself, just click on the Store icon located on your Start screen. If you can’t find it in the Store (for whatever reason) here is a link to the official Windows homepage just click the ‘Get the free update’ button.

You can of course opt for a physical hard-copy of the software if you prefer the DVD format. As stated above, the Windows 8.1 update itself is free of charge so what you’re paying for here is effectively the full retail copy of Windows 8.1, only this time upgraded to 8.1.

Pricing varies from market to market, but at the time of going to press the price for Windows 8.1 stood at USD $119.99 (approx. R1200), while the Pro version could be had for $199.99 (approx. R2000).

As with all software sourced from the Microsoft Store, you will also get the option to download your purchases too (if you really can’t wait).
