Samsung has joined forces with 3D Systems, a 3D printing company, to shows off some customised 3D printed cases for the Galaxy Note 3 device. Now, before you get too excited, the setup is confined to Las Vegas at the moment and constitutes a prototype so the odds of custom cases appearing in a retail outlet soon are fairly low.
Still, the company is demonstrating the 3D printed additions at CES 2014 and the custom designs, which aren’t wholly printed cases but are instead coin-shaped additions to the protective shell, will be shown off in a large collection at the end of the trade show.
3D Systems’ Cube 3 3D printer is being used to create the custom additions, while the actual design is done via an app. The actual printing takes about 20 minutes to complete.
It is possible that Samsung will branch out into this sort of customisation in future but, at the moment, they’ve given no indication that the 3D-printed cases are anything but a promotional product for the Consumer Electronics Show.
